The city of Seoul is a bustling metropolis with a population of 10.4 million people. Nearly half of Korea's population live in the Seoul National Capital Area, which includees Incheon and most of Gyeonggi province (making up about 25 million residents). Love it or hate it, it is the heart and soul of Korea, an
ugly edifice of communist style buildings to some, a
design capital to others.
But as interesting a place as the city may be, what's the typical Seoulite profile? The Seoul City Hall apparently wondered the same thing and with Statistics Korea released a survey Monday that should reveal a little something about the residents who reside in Korea's capital city.
To wit, Seoul's demographics and some pertinent
statistics are:
Age: 37.6
Education level: bachelor's degree
Work hours per week: 46.4
Monthly earning: 3.59 million won / U.S. $3,122
Monthly total spending: 2.8 million won / U.S. $2,435
Monthly spending on food: 610,000 won / U.S. $530
Monthly spending on private education: 580,000 won / U.S. $504
60 percent are in the middle class, earning between 2 million and 4 million won monthly / U.S. $1,739 - $3,478
Everyday there are: 264 births, 106 deaths, 197 marriages. In 2009, there were 91,000 births, a 3,700 decline from the prior year.
There are 26,000 foreigners registered, an increase of 5 times from a decade ago
Average household consists of 2.48 members
Single-person households make up 35 percent of all households, a 66 percent increase from 1999
The average Seoul household has: 1.12 computers, 2.6 mobile phones and spends 145,000 won or U.S. $126 per month on communication costs
Apartments make up more than 42 percent of Seoul's housing; houses make up 7 percent; the remaining are "multi-household" houses.
Forty-seven percent of households are in debt, with mortgage loans making up the largest portion
The subway is Seoul's transportation of choice, with 7.2 million users everyday. Buses have 4.6 million daily passengers.
The number of registered vehicles have increased about three percent annually for the past 10 years. Currently, the number stands at 2.9 million.
