The most wired country in the world is enjoying a spike in wireless data use among smartphone users since the debut of the Apple iPhone
Unsurprisingly, wireless data usage among smartphone users have spiked since the Apple iPhone hit the Korean market, jumping 100 times during the two month period since its debut. Sales surpassed the 400,000-unit mark as of Friday. The iPhone was released on Dec 1. KT Corp., Korea's second largest mobile carrier, is Apple's exclusive agent.
Though Korea is one of the most wired and enjoys the fastest average
broadband speed in the world, smartphones remained a small segment of Korea's mobile phone market.
Misguided regulation and
oligopolistic business practices had kept the Korean market insulated from outside competition. But in the wake of the iPhone invasion, Korea's tech giants must now play
catchup in the smartphone market.
According to KT, from December to January (the period since the iPhone hit the market), the monthly average wireless data usage measured around 50 million mbs, a 122-fold increase from the average monthly usage from the January to November period. Overall average wireless data usage per person also increased about 10 times over the same period, said the company.
"More than 50 percent of iPhone users said they log on to the Apple 'App Store' to download applications, which offer features beyond built-in functions," reported
Yonhap.
The average Apple iPhone user also spends about U.S. $5.40 each month purchasing applications, the KT report also found.
