A string of "hate crimes" are hitting people of "non-Slavic" appearance in Russia; Travel warning may be issued
Another racially motivated attack in Russia on a Korean student? Seems so, local police believe. And Koreans may not be the only victims - a string of "hate crimes" are hitting people of "non-Slavic" appearance, according to
Yonhap.
On the heels of a Korean student who was
stabbed to death by a group of Russian teens in Barnaul a few weeks ago, another Korea student identified by the name Shim, 29, was attacked near a shopping mall in Moscow around 5pm, Sunday, moments after he began heading home after parting ways with friends. Shim came to Moscow six years ago to attend a film college.
"The suspect, who wore a white face mask, took only one stab at Shim's neck before fleeing the scene, but excessive bleeding from the wound has left the Korean student in a critical condition," Yonhap said.
Korean Embassy Officials believe the attack was racially motivated as it "bore similarity to crimes carried out by Russian skinheads in the area."
"Another foreign resident here was killed last week by local youths and there has been a steady rise in the number of crimes against foreigners," Yonhap said.
"We are advising Korean residents here to take precautions as there has been an increase in the number of crimes against foreigners," an embassy official said.
The
Korea Times reported that the Korean government is considering issuing travel warnings for certain regions of Russia.
"We're considering various options, including the designation of travel warning zones in Russia," an official at the ministry said.
