They're lucky it wasn't a 7.0.
According to the
Korea Meterological Administration, a 3.0 magnitude quake hit an area about 8 kilometers (5 miles) north of Siheung, Gyeonggi Province around 6:08 pm local time. The
quake lasted approximately 14 seconds an earlier report by JoongAng said. A later report by the
Korea Times said the quake lasted about 3 seconds.
KBS said the quake was felt in Seoul and throughout the Gyeonggi region, "prompting numerous inquiries to media, including KBS and the KMA." The Korea Time wrote the tremor could be felt as far away as Yongin, Suwon and Goyang.
No casualties or property damage were reported.
The Korea Meteorological Administration said that in 2009 about 60 earthquakes were reported on the peninsula, the largest number in 31 years of recording. Most were undetectable by humans; only 8 were over a magnitude above 3, the level where a quake can be felt.
Less than 10 percent of Seoul's buildings are
quake-proof.
This is the seventh quake to hit S Korea this year and the
strongest of the three tremors to be
reported in the Seoul metropolitan area since 1987 when the administration began monitoring earthquakes. The prior two were recorded in Sept. 15, 2004 and June 14, 1990. None caused any damage.

When it happened, I thought "No - not in Korea." But we are on the edge of the Pacific volcanic/earthquake zone (Ring of Fire).
I am from Southern CA and grew up with earthquakes. I've lived through a collapsing building, the smoke from fires and rubble, and the continued aftershocks of almost equal magnitude from the 1995 Kobe, Japan quake and the 1999 Taichng, Taiwan quake. The house in Japan had to be rebuilt, and the quake in Taiwan created a natural lake to form. Neither country had been ready for a major earthquake.
Having experienced first hand what two killer earthquakes can do - as in devastation and the whole place looking like a war zone, I am not keen on earthquakes of any magnitude. The smaller quakes weaken fundations and walls. The thing here is that the buildings were not built with earthquakes in mind, which makes any notion of an earthquake horrifying.
I hope I don't experience any more rock and roll here unless I am listening to a live band.
I think the sound of tanks is the sound of the earthquake-unsafe concrete buildings ready to fall down!
