They're lucky it wasn't a 7.0.

According to the Korea Meterological Administration, a 3.0 magnitude quake hit an area about 8 kilometers (5 miles) north of Siheung, Gyeonggi Province around 6:08 pm local time. The quake lasted approximately 14 seconds an earlier report by JoongAng said. A later report by the Korea Times said the quake lasted about 3 seconds.

KBS said the quake was felt in Seoul and throughout the Gyeonggi region, "prompting numerous inquiries to media, including KBS and the KMA." The Korea Time wrote the tremor could be felt as far away as Yongin, Suwon and Goyang.

No casualties or property damage were reported.

The Korea Meteorological Administration said that in 2009 about 60 earthquakes were reported on the peninsula, the largest number in 31 years of recording. Most were undetectable by humans; only 8 were over a magnitude above 3, the level where a quake can be felt.

Less than 10 percent of Seoul's buildings are quake-proof.

This is the seventh quake to hit S Korea this year and the strongest of the three tremors to be reported in the Seoul metropolitan area since 1987 when the administration began monitoring earthquakes. The prior two were recorded in Sept. 15, 2004 and June 14, 1990. None caused any damage.

First, I thought my neighbour dropped something heavy when my walls rattled a little bit, but it felt a bit more intense than that. My friend called a few minutes later to ask if I was OK. A bit scary, eh?

Do you usually have earthquakes there?

I believe it's pretty rare. That's why most of the buildings here are unsafe! It'll be like Haiti if a large quake hit Seoul.

Interesting. There have been quite a few quakes in unusual places recently - been following them. Just had a 5.1 and a 2.8 and a 3.6 within last hour here in New Zealand. Ring of fire seems v. agitated. Hence my interest in Seoul's usual quake frequency. :)

I felt it too. I also thought it was was my neighbors since we share a really thin wall that connects our living rooms. It wasn't until I got on Facebook that I found out it was an earthquake and got scared. I'm from Oklahoma and South Florida so I've never felt one before. Oi... my apartment is a bit dodgy and old. I'd hate to think what would happen if a stronger one hit...especially since I'm on the top floor...

The strange thing is that it hasn't been reported on the usual sites such as USGS http://earthquak...s/quakes_all.php

Apparently - This is the third and biggest quake near Seoul since 1978 when the nation first installed such equipment.

I work in Siheung. I thought maybe they were blasting a new subway tunnel, but my co-workers said no. A couple of them thought it was thunder. Interesting that I didn't feel the Szechuan Quake while living in China, but I was in the perfect spot to catch this one.

That site only reports 4.5's or higher when they are from other coutries that's why it not on there. I also thought it was a larger truck or something (They are doing onstruction work next door) and also didn't realize until I went on Facebook later one what it was. Ha ha, where would we be without Facebook?

we live near K=16 US ARmy base which is very close to Siheung and we felt it. ti only lasted a few seconds and felt like a big truck drive down our little street and shook the building pretty hard. I actually went and looked out the window wondering what a truck was doing on our little winding road. LOL

I felt and "heard" it. I've lived in Japan, Okinawa, California and Hawaii. I've been trough several 5.0 or higher quakes. This one was a minor tremor but it still counded like a tank going down a concrete street.

When it happened, I thought "No - not in Korea." But we are on the edge of the Pacific volcanic/earthquake zone (Ring of Fire).

The earthquake felt like godzilla had stepped on the building. The shake rattled the walls of my classroom. While it was only a small quake at 3.0, I ran down the stairs to the 1st floor.
I am from Southern CA and grew up with earthquakes. I've lived through a collapsing building, the smoke from fires and rubble, and the continued aftershocks of almost equal magnitude from the 1995 Kobe, Japan quake and the 1999 Taichng, Taiwan quake. The house in Japan had to be rebuilt, and the quake in Taiwan created a natural lake to form. Neither country had been ready for a major earthquake.
Having experienced first hand what two killer earthquakes can do - as in devastation and the whole place looking like a war zone, I am not keen on earthquakes of any magnitude. The smaller quakes weaken fundations and walls. The thing here is that the buildings were not built with earthquakes in mind, which makes any notion of an earthquake horrifying.

I hope I don't experience any more rock and roll here unless I am listening to a live band.

It looks like even a small quake is cause to be afraid in Korea.

I think the sound of tanks is the sound of the earthquake-unsafe concrete buildings ready to fall down!
